The escape at Alcatraz was very memorable because the prisoners had to be extremely thorough and dedicated to the plan, and considering how high security the prison was, they could not have missed a single detail in the planning and action when attempting to escape. The way that they made fake heads to misdirect the guards and use everyday items to make shift a raft will never be forgotten. However, the most extraordinary piece that made this crime extremely famous is the fact that it was never able to be solved. According to the FBI, they spent 17 years trying to find any evidence of whether these men did or did not survive, but the results were not clear. Therefore, on December 31st, 1979, the case was officially closed and it was recorded that John and the Anglin brothers were presumably dead due to drowning in the water surrounding Alcatraz prison.
